"Un jour de mai" de George Pelecanos - Seuil Policiers

May 1972. A day at the con, too hot ... A day to fuck up out of idleness. A day that will leave an indelible mark. That was the day when three white youths driving in their car to gender and land in the black neighborhood in the suburbs of Washington. A bit provocative, a little reckless and a bit of unconsciousness to vibrate the spine. Of course, it goes wrong. A shooting, a fugitive, one marked for life upon his flesh, a murderer and accomplices. A trial ... Then the silence of the passing years. Thirty five years later, the reluctant heroes of the news item are adults. Father, losers, doctor, businessman ... each protagonist has her way in terms of drama, with this sequel in the head, this desire for battle, to end this dead weight that haunts them still, despite appearances.

George Pelecanos is one of those American writers who tell America brightly through the small end of the telescope: its cracks, its wanderings and struggles against itself. Through the course of his characters, he paints a portrait of specific "small" people, with its history that is the daily history of America in recent decade. The author Visually we walk between the years rock'n'roll and disco years, between community and individualism, between Vietnam and Iraq war, between crime and the American Dream, between descent into hell and redemption, between rich and middle classes, between control and abandonment ... Pelecanos has sometimes irritating naivety, any American, that things must necessarily get better because you move, the force of his country lies in its ability to cauterize the wounds to be a man almost nine save his soul more later before his judges. "May Day" is a dip in an America far from the glitz and glitter, which saw its quest for the best with the pain of a latent desire to sing that day. Between resignation and hope, this book insists mastered that nothing is ever quite definitive, that the happy ending is always possible in technicolor ... Also in empathy, we smiled corner with the secret hope he's right.
