Most travelers know the theory of culture shock.
When you arrive in a country is "high". You discover and you are amazed by everything you see. You have a thirst for discoveries all meetings are a unique learning opportunity.
After several weeks, when the newspaper moved, you notice things that displease you. You compare what is right here, pain here, with what you are accustomed to live in your country. Aspects you thought the true longer. You are confronted with the hard reality of things. You miss your family and you think to leave.
The third step is to back up the hill, put things in perspective and to question rather than judge. Finally, the fourth step, you live at home in your host community ...
Mais qu'en est-il des chocs culturels occidentaux qu'on vit ici?! Je n'ai lu aucun truc la dessus! Je m'explique. La semaine, j'ai vécu deux chocs culturels assez intenses.
Nous étions, les volontaires ISF du Burkina, tous réunis pour un meeting mensuel. Pour la deuxième fois seulement depuis mon arrivée, on décide de se rendre dans une piscine de Ouagadougou. Le choc! Un bel hotel, des trucs qui brillent, des musiciens qui chantent, des tables en marbres, des blancs partout...Le choc quoi!
Deux jours plus tard, de retour dans ma ville, je passe en vélo et je vois, à ma grande surprise, un groupe d'adultes s'adonner à la pétanque..., et oui, ce sport practiced by legendary aunts and uncles, our favorite home. A corn on the cob with that! Remove the strawberry liqueur and orange crush and we celebrate it! There are more possible surprise!
was the story of my two cultural shocks of the week.
PS. Incidentally, I was also shaken when I saw that there was also some strawberry liqueur here. Less popular but still, enjoyed by many. I tasted the next week without fail!
